Have you ever gotten a perfectly well meaning gift, only to realize that it is something you never needed in the first place? That trinket that collects dust. That sweater you know you will never wear. Or those bath salts that just sit in your bathroom cabinet? If you’re anything like me, you don’t have the heart to tell the gift giver that you don’t actually need or want any of it. As of course, their intentions are pure. They just want to show you that they care.
This year, consider donating your gifts (actually, why not this weekend?). And I don’t just mean tossing those gifts in the donation box. I mean also encouraging all those well-meaning friends and family to make a donation to charity in lieu of a gift. Get the word out through your social media. Tell everyone in your life about your favorite nonprofit organizations or ask them to donate to their own cause on your behalf. Birthdays and holidays would be a lot more meaningful when we know we are giving back to society.
Encourage the art of giving. You don’t have to be a philanthropist to donate your time and money to social causes that need your attention.
