You diligently sign up for the most trending fitness classes, like aerobics, kick-boxing or more recently, Zumba. And hence begins the morning struggle to wake up in time for the classes, cut down on junk food and to get your lazy bones in motion. And this lasts for about a week or so, before you give up and give in.
This time, it is going to be different. And here’s how:
Friends That Sweat Together Stay Together
Make yourself accountable to a friend, so you can’t pull any of the excuses you tend to when working out solo. Tag along a friend you probably would pick to go binge drinking during ‘happy hours’. If truth be told, she is probably the one who needs it the most, too. Plus, you both can spend your cheat days together.
Just as in the story of ‘The Tortoise and the Hare’, consistency is the key to success. Remember how your clothes don’t fit, how your body feels sluggish and how your skin doesn’t glow? Get moving. And don’t stop. The next 6 months would go by whether you work out or not. Do yourself a favor and make them count.
Track the Progress
Scale is not the only way to track your progress! Take note of how your clothes feel on you, how you can do more push-ups with every passing week, and how you slowly build up your endurance and stamina. Take pictures to track your progress. Surprisingly, this will also act as much-needed motivation at times when you feel like giving up.
Set measurable goals
To lose weight shouldn’t be your ultimate goal. It is only the beginning of a long term commitment to staying healthy, fit and bawse! Try making smaller goals that ladder up to something bigger, making them less intimidating and more attainable. Aim at fitting into your college jeans.. or running that extra mile without fainting. Whatever be your goal, be 100% committed to slaying it.
For every achievement, big or small, remember to reward yourself. That said, don’t reward yourself with food. As they say, you are not a dog. Go for a manicure, sleep in late on a weekend, or give yourself permission to buy all the books on your to-read list for the year!
“Here’s to us. Here’s to ordering salad when you really want a burger. TO making an ass out of ourselves in combat cardio class. To drinking more water than seems possible. To going five minutes more on the elliptical. To working out twice as much as your skinny roommate. To saying, “Screw you” to the old you. To falling in love with the you that you really are, the you you want to become. To looking in the mirror and not seeing any change, throwing on your running shoes and hitting the gym anyway. Here’s to carrots, and shin splints, and sweatshirts, and perseverance, and sore muscles, and stinky socks, and 7 am conditioning class, and falling down, and getting back up. And here’s to getting up tomorrow and doing it all again.”
Get moving, girl.
